The mix your succulents and cacti actually want. Molly's Succulent & Cactus Mix is a gritty, mineral-heavy potting blend built to mimic the rocky, fast-draining ground succulents and cacti grow in naturally. It drains in seconds, stays porous instead of compacting, and lets roots dry out completely between waterings, the way Echeveria, Haworthia, Aloe, and true cacti need. Proudly made in the USA, it comes in a resealable, recyclable bag to stay fresh between uses.

Ingredients

A mineral-heavy blend of premium components, pest-free.

  • Pumice, black & red lava rock
  • Akadama, Hyuga
  • Orchid bark (fir)
  • Worm castings
  • Beneficial fungi (Rhizophagus irregularis) & bacteria (Bacillus pumilus)

Benefits

  • Stops root rot from overwatering. Drains in seconds and stays porous for years, unlike bagged mixes that look gritty on the label but compact like regular soil.
  • No soil, no gnats, no mess. Free of fertilizers, pests, and soil-borne disease.
  • Strengthens roots and builds immunity. The mycorrhizae and bacteria in the mix help roots reach further for water and nutrients, while keeping disease-causing pathogens in check.
  • Holds its structure far longer than standard soil. Pumice and lava rock don't decompose the way organic material does, so the mix can go 2 to 3 years between full replacements if your plant doesn't need repotting sooner.

FAQs

1. How is Molly's Succulent & Cactus Mix different from other bagged succulent soil?

Most products labeled "succulent soil" or "cactus mix" at garden centers are regular potting soil with a handful of sand added. It looks the part, but it still compacts and holds water. Succulents that need to dry out completely between waterings rot anyway. A real succulent mix runs mineral-heavy rather than organic-heavy, roughly 70% mineral aggregate to 30% organic matter. Molly's Succulent & Cactus Mix is built to that ratio:

  • Drains in seconds so water doesn't sit around the roots.
  • Feels heavy and rocky in the bag, not light and fluffy like a mislabeled "succulent soil."
  • Stays porous for years instead of compacting after a few months.
  • Free of pests, pathogens, and soil-borne disease.
  • Naturally nutrient-rich, with calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, and more.

2. What are Akadama and Hyuga?

Akadama and Hyuga are volcanic minerals that give the mix its structure. Akadama is a granular, clay-like volcanic soil prized for drainage and water retention in bonsai and succulent growing. Hyuga is a lightweight, porous volcanic rock that improves drainage and aeration the same way. Both break down slowly, which is why the mix holds its structure for years instead of months.

3. Do I need to add anything to Molly's Succulent & Cactus Mix?

No. This is a complete standalone mix, built from mineral and organic ingredients that cover everything succulents and cacti need on their own. You're welcome to blend in other mixes or additives, but nothing else is required to make it work.

4. What plants is Molly's Succulent & Cactus Mix suited for?

This mix is built for succulents, cacti, and other drought-tolerant plants: Echeveria, Sedum, Crassula, Haworthia, and Aloe, plus true cacti like Mammillaria and Echinopsis. It also suits caudex plants like Adenium and drought-tolerant bonsai species such as juniper and pine. Not sure about a specific plant? Ask us. As a general rule, anything that prefers to dry out fully between waterings belongs in this mix.

5. How often should I replace the mix?

Once a year, on average, timed with your plant's normal repotting cycle. That's a recommendation, not a hard limit. Pumice and lava rock don't decompose, so the mix can hold its structure for 2 to 3 years if repotting isn't needed sooner. When you do repot, leftover mix clinging to the roots is fine to leave in place. It'll keep doing its job in the new pot.

6. What's the best way to water with this mix?

Water every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the plant and your environment. The mix drains fast, so water needs to soak the whole pot evenly before it runs through the bottom.

Every so often, bottom-water instead: set the pot in an inch of water for 30 to 60 minutes. The mix wicks the moisture upward, rehydrating the whole root zone and encouraging roots to grow downward.

7. How much does one 5-quart bag cover?

A 5-quart bag covers more than its size suggests:

  • Roughly 10–12 small (4") pots
  • 6–8 medium (5") pots
  • 4–6 larger (6") pots
We ship from Orange County, and we only ship within the United States. We do not ship to Hawaii / Canada / International. We typically ship on Mondays or Tuesdays to avoid plants being stuck in transit over the weekends, but we may sometimes ship later in the week depending on order volume. With that said, we cannot guarantee or control delivery time. If delivery time is a concern, please opt for upgraded shipping.

We take great care when packaging and preparing your plants for shipment. They'll be shipped either in a nursery pot in soil or sphagnum moss, or shipped bare root wrapped in sphagnum moss or other damp material to retain moisture. We also add poly-fil around the plant for padding, then wrap it in bubble wrap, and finally add packing peanuts for extra cushion to ensure a safe and clean transport.

We also offer local pick-up if you're in the Orange County area.

We're a U.S. based seller so our plants ship directly from our greenhouse in Orange County to your house. You don't have to worry about the hassles associated with ordering overseas. No worrying about phytosanitary certificates, plants being stuck in Customs or USDA inspection, or having to acclimate plants to their new environment. When you order from us, it's simple and straightforward. Our plants are rare, but our customer service is always well-done!
