Sol Soils Houseplant Chunky Mix - Fast Draining Soilless Tropical Aroid Potting Mix
Sol Soils Houseplant Chunky Mix is a peat-free potting mix for leafy tropical, jungle, and aroid houseplants. It carries the most organic matter and moisture retention of any Sol Soils mix, which makes it the most forgiving of everyday watering slip-ups. The chunky structure holds moisture in its porous ingredients while excess water drains straight through, keeping roots aerated. Pot straight from the bag.
Ingredients
Peat-free — no peat moss, which is strip-mined and unsustainable.
Inorganic:
- Calcined clay – Holds steady moisture in the surrounding mix, so it never turns soggy or bone dry.
- Pumice (volcanic rock) – Porous, so it retains moisture and helps roots take up water and nutrients.
- Perlite – Keeps the mix light and lets water flow through.
- LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) – Retains moisture between waterings while draining the excess.
Organic:
- Coconut husks – Recycled coconut byproduct that promotes lignins, feeding beneficial bacteria around the roots.
- Forest products – Add organic matter that improves structure, water retention, and fertility.
Benefits
- Roots breathe – Chunky, varied particle sizes open air pockets so oxygen reaches the root system.
- Drains fast, resists rot – Excess water flushes through instead of pooling against the roots.
- Waters less often – Porous ingredients hold moisture, then release it slowly and evenly.
- Lasts 24–36 months – Durable components don't break down or turn hydrophobic, so you repot far less than the 12–18 months typical mixes need.
- Peat-free and gives back – Every bag purchased plants a tree in a deforested area.
Plants it's made for
Made for leafy indoor plants that want fast drainage and root oxygen:
- Tropical houseplants – Monstera, Pothos, Philodendron, Rubber Plant, ZZ, Snake Plant.
- Jungle houseplants – Ferns, Calatheas, Palms, Dracaena, Spider Plant.

FAQs
How do I use it? Pot straight from the bag. Water fully, then let the top portion dry before watering again.
Do I still need to fertilize? Yes. The mix has no chemical fertilizers added, so keep your normal feeding routine.
How often do I repot? Every 24–36 months for most plants - about double a standard mix. If growth doesn't restart for a full season, the plant may be root-bound and ready for a larger pot, which is a sign of healthy growth.
We take great care when packaging and preparing your plants for shipment. They'll be shipped either in a nursery pot in soil or sphagnum moss, or shipped bare root wrapped in sphagnum moss or other damp material to retain moisture. We also add poly-fil around the plant for padding, then wrap it in bubble wrap, and finally add packing peanuts for extra cushion to ensure a safe and clean transport.
We also offer local pick-up if you're in the Orange County area.
